I used to love Mangetout when it was smaller & was a little worried the good food and vibes wouldn't transition over to a bigger venue very well but I'm more than happy to say I was wrong to worry. Mangetout has so much character, a great atmosphere and you will be hard pushed to find a better food establishment in Southend on sea.
Mangetout somehow seems to pull off what many other restaurants in Southend fail to - personality and quality. You feel looked after, and the food is simply excellent. They started as a small cafe-style restaurant with limited opening hours - and it was great then, and gained a huge fan base, and even made the press with some of its impressive 'Giantwich' sandwiches. Mangetout recently reopened, taking over the much maligned Churchills bar - and with an impressive refurbishment it has kicked off in style. If asked a few months back where to get a steak in Southend, I would have without a doubt said 'Miller and Carter' - where I've had many an excellent steak. However, Mangetout is definitely a contender - and early steaks suggest possibly a new winner. I've eaten there 3 times now, and the steak has been simply amazing - I expected it to be good, but it really was quite something. I need to try a few more cuts - but locally at least, I think I have to say that Mangetout has the best steak in town. They seemed to be struggling with the sheer volume of people in the larger premises when it first opened - but at last visit, things seemed a lot more organised and we were served quickly, without any problems. Something I love about Mangetout is that you get the feeling they really care about the restaurant, and their customers. I'm definitely going back, several times, and I'll recommend it to anyone that will listen!
