Southend’s Top 5 Spots for Supersize Portions

In an era of gourmet dining, which quite often equates to incredibly tiny portions, it’s no wonder our tummies growl with excitement when a waitress brings a large plate of grub our way! With this in mind, we’ve taken the time to compile a list of restaurants in the Southend-on-Sea area that are renowned for their generous portion sizes and overall scrumptious food.

My Kitchen

157 – 159 Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, SS0 7EL

No matter what you order in this fine establishment, the portions are always HUGE (in a good way of course). Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, the plates are always full to the brim and the food is always fresh and super tasty. Try the Protein Pancakes, they’re delicious – you get 3 large pancakes with peanut butter and chocolate sauce not forgetting as much fruit as you can eat!

DON’T be afraid to ask for a doggy bag here, it is common practise, so there’s no need to feel sheepish about it.

The Railway Pub

Clifftown Road, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1AJ

This vegan friendly hotel pub provides fresh and healthy food throughout the day. The meals are a set price and at only £8 each, they’re not to be sniffed at! Saying that, the food smells extremely good, so we recommend sniffing that! Choose from breakfast, lunch and dinner at this quirky and somewhat Dracula-esque establishment, but don’t let its vampire charm put you off. This hotel is truly unique and you’d be silly not to try it!

Legend-Deli

16 Market Place, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1DA

Don’t be mistaken by the name, this place is so much more than a deli. It may be small in size and somewhat tucked away but the food is lovely and need we say it, the portions are BIG! Whether you fancy the salt beef, Turkish flatbreads stuffed with Halloumi or duck burger, you won’t be disappointed. In the evening, you can bring your own drinks too making this venue very reasonable in price.

Mangetout

7 Tylers Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 2BB

For meat eaters and burger lovers, Mangetout really is the place to go! It’s a family run grill and smokehouse so if you’re a true foodie, like the owners, you’ll appreciate the locally sourced ingredients. Choose from rump, sirloin and ribeye steak, ribs and wings, toasted wraps, char grilled chicken, hot dogs and more! There are also live music performances not to mention fresh cocktails all in a contemporary setting.

Saxon King

160 Priory Crescent, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6QN

Sit down and relax at The Saxon King pub, just yards from where a Saxon King’s burial chamber was found in 2004. Dubbed ‘The King of Bling’ this pub commemorates the finding of this wealthy Essex Sovereign. Why not pay a visit and toast him?

This very welcoming pub and restaurant boasts comfy seating in a relaxing setting making it an ideal spot for Sunday roasts, and just a stone’s throw from Priory Park. Try the rotisserie chicken or one of the other fantastic dishes on offer.

So, without further ado, it’s time you put these places through their paces! If it’s big portions and great tasting food you’re after – you will not be disappointed! No more rations, it’s time to get stuffed with supersize platefuls!
